Empowering Farmers, Nurturing Innovation, And Driving The Next Green Revolution Through Research, Education, And Outreach.
ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam
ICAR-IARI Assam was established at Gogamukh, Dhemaji, to address the specific agricultural needs of North-East India a region rich in biodiversity and agricultural potential, but one where the Green Revolution largely did not reach. The institute was announced in the Union Budget 2014–15 and its foundation stone was laid by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on 26th May, 2017.
Today, the institute conducts research across crop science, natural resource management, and animal and fishery sciences, runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in agriculture, and actively engages with farming communities through training, demonstrations, and outreach working towards a second Green Revolution in North-East India.
Established 2017,
587 Acres Campus.

Message from the Director's Desk
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the official website of the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam.
The North-Eastern region of India is endowed with immense agricultural potential — diverse agro-climatic conditions, rich biodiversity, and vast natural resources that remain largely untapped. It was with the clear vision of harnessing this potential and addressing the long-standing gap in agricultural research and education in this region that ICAR-IARI Assam was established at Gogamukh, Dhemaji, Assam.

It was with the clear vision of harnessing this potential and addressing the long-standing gap in agricultural research and education in this region that ICAR-IARI Assam was established at Gogamukh, Dhemaji, Assam.
Since the laying of the foundation stone by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India in May 2017, the institute has made significant progress in establishing itself as a centre of excellence for agricultural research, postgraduate education, and outreach in the North-Eastern region. We have developed a modern campus spanning 587 acres, established well-equipped research laboratories, commenced undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes in agriculture, and built an active research portfolio of more than 32 projects — all anchored in the specific needs of North-East India.
I invite students, researchers, farmers, partner institutions, and all stakeholders to engage with our work, explore the resources on this website, and join us in advancing the cause of sustainable agricultural development in North-East India.
Our mandate is to promote high standards of agricultural education, undertake need-based and innovative research, and generate effective extension models for the farming communities of the region. In pursuit of this mandate, our scientists are engaged in research on acid soil management, climate-resilient crop varieties, water resource utilisation, integrated fish farming, underutilised horticultural biodiversity, and livelihood diversification — work that is directly relevant to the agricultural conditions and challenges of this region.
The institute currently has 141 students enrolled in its B.Sc. (Agriculture) and M.Sc. (Agriculture) programmes from more than 20 states across India, reflecting the national character and reach of this institution. Their presence, alongside a young and dedicated team of scientists and staff, gives us confidence in the future that this institute will build.
